Fashion

1. Dove Evolution video:There were a lot of changes made to the model. First, they did her make-up and hair and took the photo. Then, they went in with photoshop and made her look completely different. They enlarged her eyes and made her neck look longer. They also raised her check and eyebrow bones.

2. Body Evolution video:
changes-
slimed her body
enlarged eyes
made legs longer
made neck longer
made her skin lighter
cleared skin
face slimmer
raised eyebrows

3. Crazy photoshop skills video:
changes-
made her body thinner
made her hair longer
made her face slimmer
made legs longer

4. No, it is not ethically acceptable to change a person's appearance because it makes women feel like they have to look perfect to be beautiful. Changes like these are what makes the perception of beauty in our society so distorted.
5. I think that this type of photo manipulation should never be used but there is some circumstances in which it's even more ethnically wrong than it already is. For example, taking photos of people from other countries or ethnicity's  and making them look completely different.
6. The types of changes that are okay are the ones that don't change the way they look or their body. For example, fixing a piece of hair that got in the way.
7. The difference between photojournalism and fashion photography is that photojournalism is more in the moment. A photojournalists job is to tell a story while a fashion photographer's is to model something. Fashion photography is more behind the scenes.
8. Each type of photography has a relationship to reality that affects their ethical practice. Photojournalism's relationship to reality is that it captures stories of real life and things that are actually happening in today's world. Photojournalism is ver real and in the moment. Fashion photography has a relationship to reality because the photos are everywhere from magazines to billboards and it's the manipulated photos that change people's perception of beauty because they aren't realistic.
9. I think that we watched these videos to realize what damage photo manipulation can do. It reminds us of why we don't use the tools they used to completely change photos/people into something they're not.
10. I think that none of these videos were about guys because women have so much pressure and are subjected to looking a certain way to be classified as beautiful which is a problem.

Magazine Part 2

Early Magazine Covers
In the 1700s magazine covers didn't always have covers. They didn't tell the reader what content was inside or have a way of catching the readers attention. When they did they modeled them after the covers of books. It wasn't till later in the 1800s when Cover lines began to appear, introducing th readers to what's inside.

The Poster Cover
From the 1890s to 1960s one type of cover dominated the magazine field. The covers were just simple photos without headlines or table of contents. Some people thought that they photos on the covers didn't have anything to do with the magazine itself. The covers gave a certain mood to the publication.

Pictures Married to Type
Pictures married to type are covers that has great headlines to get the readers attention. Up until the 1960's, these magazine covers had models in unusual body positions. They later on became face portraits and magazines started using captions to go with the photos. The covers usually consisted of models in a posed position, cover lines, and a title which is all still used today.

In the Forest of Words
The magazine covers had words covering the whole photograph and the photos were in the background instead of the main focus. Usually the covers were covered in headlines and subheadlines that were sometimes larger than the title itself. Also, these covers had a lot of captions that were in bright text. This made the the captions stand out from the title and the photo.

My Favorite Cover

Favorite
OUT, November, Josh Hutcherson
"The magnetic image of a young movie star glancing over his shoulder did not need any embellishment. A muted color scheme and opaque logo was designed to showcase the ’50s-inspired photo."

Josh Hutcherson is the only focus of this Out magazine cover. The cover of this magazine communicates that Josh Hutcherson will be starring in his new Hunger Games movie. This is communicated by the small caption on the side. I like this photo because the exposure is really good. His face is a little darker which makes the picture look so interesting. The lighting is great too because the photo isn't too bright. Also, the cover is very simple and has great composition. I like how he takes up the whole cover and how it's set up. This portrait is formal because he is in a posed position.

Magazine Tips

5 important things to keep in mind are the functions of covers. For example, the brand, the image's appeal, to pull the casual glancer in, to promise benefits, and to show off the service.

American Soldier Slide Show and Captions (Review)

A. The most powerful image from the slideshow is photo number 31 because it was Ian's first day back home from Iraq. There is a lot emotion in the picture and you could tell everyone was happy to hug him again.
B. Set #1 at home in Denver- from image #1 to image #9
Set #2 at Basic Training- from image #16 to #28
Set #3 In Iraq- from image #51 to #70
Set #4 back in Denver- from image #71 to #82
Set #4 was very powerful because all of his family and friends were welcoming him home. The picture of his mother crying is the most powerful because you can see how proud she is of her son.
C. Images work together to tell a story by going in the order they happened.

A. For the photos in which Ian is the main subject, the verbs are written in present tense.
B. The captions enhance the photographs by telling exactly what is happening and how people are feeling or what they desire.

Image #15
Ian sits in the commanders office thinking about what he wants for his future. Thinking back to when he was home with his family he realized how much he missed them.

Image #6
Ian hugs his two closest friends before leaving home. While he hugged them he thought of everything he was leaving behind and how much he was going to miss them.

Image #30

Ian gets ready for a ceremony with some of the other soldiers. As he looked in the mirror he remembered all he hard work he did and how much he deserved to be honored.

Self Portrait and Portraits Part 1

Break the Rules of Composition: Source

"My theory is that while they are useful to know and employ that they are also useful to know so you can purposely break them – as this can lead to eye catching results."

Alter Your Perspective: Source

"Get up high and shoot down on your subject or get as close to the ground as you can and shoot up. Either way you’ll be seeing your subject from an angle that is bound to create interest."

Fill the Frame: Source

"It’s not something that you’d do in every shot that you take – but if your subject is the only feature in the shot – there’s really nowhere else to look."

Environmental Portraits

I chose this photo because this is something I would like to do since I'm a dancer. I like this photo because it looks interesting and the fact that it's in black and white makes the girl stand out.

I chose this photo because the environment is very interesting and I like it because the girl in this photo has a polaroid camera.

Photography Self Portraits

I like this photo because it's unique and eye catching. I chose it because I like how his photo tells a story.

Source

I like this photo because it's different. It's focused on the eyes which makes the photo stand out. I chose it because it shows how you can take photos from different perspectives and angles.

Casual Portraits

Source

I picked this photo because even though it's a casual portrait the girl is looking away from the camera which makes it a little bit more unique.

Source

I like this photo because it's a casual photo and there is a neutral background. Also, the man isn't in the center of the photo which makes it look more intriguing.

For my portrait assignment I will be shooting one of my friends or my little cousin. I want to shoot an environmental portrait so I will be shooting either outdoors or at my dance studio. To make the shot successful I need to shoot from different perspectives and get out of my comfort zone. I also need to remember the rules of photography while taking the picture.
