Academic Shoot Preview Assignment 2

My favorite photo from the Academic and Community section is the photo titled, "Drop the Bass". The girl in this photo is wearing safety glasses and conducting a science experiment. She's pouring some type of pink liquid into a bowl and the pink liquid is splashing.

1.  I chose this photo because the photographer captured the pink liquid splashing at the perfect time which makes the photo very interesting.
2. The rules of photography evident in this photo are lines and avoiding mergers. There are leading lines of some of the pink liquid dripping down the sides of the bowl which lead to the splashing of the liquid. The photographer also made sure that there wasn't any distracting things in the background.

1. I think that I can take photos like the ones I saw today by going into different classrooms where students are working hard or doing something interesting.
2. I would like to go into science classrooms because unusual experiments are being conducted.
3. As a photographer, I can take amazing photos like the ones I saw today by following the rules of photography and trying different things. Positioning the camera and trying different angles are examples of things I can do.

Academic Shoot Preview Assignment

The Story:
This photo tells a story because students are helping feed the homeless. You can see in the photo how happy the homeless people are and how hard the students are working. The photographer, Samantha Jung, really captured the moment.

Photographer: Samantha Jung

Action and Emotion:
In this photo by Casey Simmons, there is a lot of action and emotion going on. There is action because the students are performing a science experiment that results in bubbles floating all over the room. There is also a lot of emotion shown on the girls' faces. They both look amazed and surprised by the results of the experiment.
Photographer: Casey Simmons

Filling the Frame:
The frame of this photo is completely filled because there is a lot going on. The whole frame is filled with students conducting an experiment. The photographer, Maggie Zhang, did a great job in capturing every aspect of what was going on.

Photo Manipulation and Ethics

A. The main points of the story are that photo manipulation is wrong and that people are careless. People need to realize that they can't change the content of the photo. For example, one of the pictures showed a group of government people where a woman was photoshopped out of it. This is an example of changing the content of the photo and its just wrong.
B. This type of photo editing is unethical ad unacceptable because it completely changes the message the photo was trying to send into something untrue.

A. This photo is the most unethical photo because it makes it look like the soldier is the bad guy when really he was trying to protect the people.

B. This photo is the least unethical because the content of the photo wasn't changed.

Post Shoot Reflection

1. Finding a "metal" picture was the most challenging part of the photo shoot. There is a lot of metal at Bowie but finding a way to take an interesting photo was challenging.

2. I found myself thinking about focus and how to position the camera. For example, one of the photos I took was trying to make the background out of focus and the books focused which was very challenging. Also, I tried holding the camera differently to give my pictures a different perspective.

3. If I could do the assignment again I would try to remember the basic rules of photography to make my pictures look more professional. I would also try to keep my pictures simple but still creative.

4. Some of the things that I would do the same are to keep trying to master how to focus and position the camera.

5. The rules of composition I achieved in my photos are simplicity, lines, and avoiding mergers. My metal picture shows simplicity and all of my other pictures show lines. I also avoided mergers in all of my pictures.

6. Yes, I am interested in shooting these types of prompts again because it is a great way to practice the basic rules of photography and try out new things.

1. Two positive things about her photos are that they are vey creative and that she followed most of the basic rules of photography. My favorite picture is the metal photo because its very unique! One thing that could be improved is to try to take pictures from different angles.

Avoiding Mergers

This photo shows merges because the angle of the photo makes it look like there is a pole coming out of the mans head. The photographer should have avoided the merger by taking the photo from a different angle.

Framing

This photo shows framing because the two people are being framed by the destroyed building. The photographer made the people in the middle stand out as the main focus by framing.

Balance

This photo shows balance because there are two buildings on either side of the photo. Also, there are two people on the left hand side, one person in the middle, and two people on the right hand side. The photographer did a really nice job of making the photo balanced.

Lines

This photo shows lines because of the many types of lines displayed. The building has straight up and down lines and there is also a huge diagonal line going across the building from one corner of the photo to another. Lastly, the smoke shows horizontal lines.

The Rule of Thirds

This photo shows the rule of thirds because the photographer chose the lower right position of a fireman so that we could see everything that was going on in the background.

Simplicity

This photo shows simplicity because the photographer focused on the building and the background is the blue from the sky. There isn't any distractions in the background which makes the photo more simple.

National Geographic

Michael Patrick O'Neill

- This is my favorite picture because the way the sun shines down onto the water is incredible. Also, I love how all the sea lions are doing different things. The different hues of blue look really cool and you can even see the shadows under the sea lions on the ocean floor.

- If I had to submit a photo to the contest I would probably take a picture of some place in South America or Africa because I love learning about the world and about different cultures and people.

Touching People

1. I think that this project and photo essay is very interesting and different.

2. I think that I would participate if someone came up to me and asked me to be in a photo shoot where I had to touch someone.

3. An unusual photo similar to these that would be fun to go and shoot would be to get different people from different places all over the world and have them wear what the other person would usually wear (like cultural clothing) or have them hug or hold hands.

4. The photography was good and I liked looking at them, even though most of the people looked awkward it was an interesting concept.

Top 40 Photos

Photographer unknown
I chose this photo because I love what it represents. These two men traded jerseys as a sign of respect during the World Cup which was marred by racism. This photo caught my eye because of the brightness and warmth of the photo and how much respect they have for each other is displayed. This photo made the cut for the top 40 best pictures because of how moving it is and it shows how much the world has changed.  Also, the quality of the photo is great.
Photographer unknown
I chose this photo because its very touching and sweet. This mother served 7 months in Iraq and finally got to come home and see her daughter. This photo caught my eye because the timing of this picture is incredible, how relieved the mother looks and the way she just fell onto the ground to hug her daughter. This photo made the cut for the top 40 best pictures because many people can relate to having their loved ones away and finally getting to see them again. Also, because its a great quality photograph in general.

Stan Honda
I chose this photo because when I first saw it I felt happy and its so inspiring. These two women became the first same-sex couple to get married in Manhattan City. This is my favorite picture because it shows equality and I hope that one day it will be like this all over the world. There is just so much joy and love in this picture and its truly admirable. This photo caught my eye because I love how content they look and how they.re hugging. This photo made the top 40 best photos because of how beautiful it is. The color of their shirts also made the picture stand out and the photographer captured this moment at the perfect time.

Warm Up

1. The upside down photos are very unique. When I first saw them I thought it was really cool how just by taking the picture upside down, the perspective of the photo changes.

2. Yes, when I first saw the pictures it took me a second to realize what I was looking at. Everyone is so used to seeing everything right side up and it was a great way for people to view things differently.

3. Sometime I can try something unique like this because its what makes your photos stand out and catch people's attention.

The Camera

Questions and answers:

1. The camera obscura effect is an optical effect which was the first camera. The hole was the lens which focused and projected light onto the dark chamber.

2. When Isaac Newton and Christian Huygens understod optics and how to high quality glass lens, we got a step closer to creating the modern camera.

3. The parts of the first modern camera made by Niepce were a glass lens, film, and a dark box.

4. Both the modern digital cameras and Niepce's camera are made of the same things, lens, film, and a dark box.

5. Digital cameras use CCD to capture an image.

6. The difference between Auto Mode and Program Mode is that with Program Mode you can control flash and a few other camera settings.

7. The Portrait mode is used for blurring out the background of a picture. It works by using the fastest available lens setting which is aperture.

8. The Sports mode is used to freeze motion. It works by using the highest shutter speed possible.

9. You should do a half press on the trigger button because there is more control over focus, a faster camera response time, and it encourages better composition.

10. The Disabled Flash sign is used to turn your flash off.

11. The Auto Flash sign is used when you need more light.

12. If there is too much light your picture will look washed out.

13. If there is too little light then your picture will be too dark.

14. A stop is a a relative measure of light.

15. The new planet is one stop brighter if there were 2 suns instead of one.

16. The new planet is 2 stops brighter if there were 4 suns instead of 2.

17. A longer shutter speed gives you more light.

18. A shorter shutter speed gives you less light.

19. Aperture controls the brightness of a photo.

20. When adjusting the aperture you can increase the amount of light by setting large openings.

Best and Worst

This is  my worst photo because its too bright. The photo is also just really simple and doesn't have much too it. I think it would better if the lighting was different. One thing I do like however, is where Jack is standing and his distance from the camera.

I really like this picture of Lilly because the lighting is good and there's no shadowing on her face.
Also, there isn't anything in the background thats distracting. The focus is mainly on her. The way her hair is kind of covering her eye looks cool too.
